Cape Breton Fiddlers Youth Run - Earn Your Laces Campaign Underway for 2012

Students in schools across Cape Breton are now working to, “Earn Their Laces” in preparation for the Fiddlers Youth Run, presented by Doctors’ Nova Scotia on Saturday, June 2.

“Last year nearly 3,500 youth in schools across Cape Breton earned their laces by accumulating various running distances in their schools and being part of their schools Kids’ Run Club, in the weeks leading up the Youth Run,” says Aron Ashton, Health Educator with Public Health Services and Chair of the Youth Run.  “The Earn Your Laces campaign is an added incentive to keep youth on track and keep them moving from now until the Youth Run - it’s an added bonus to the already successful program.”

To motivate and encourage youth, the Earn Your Laces campaign also indentifies healthy living champions in the local community who exemplify an active lifestyle.  These champions may be teachers, doctors, business leaders, etc. but the one thing they have in common is that they lead healthy and active lifestyles and they’ll all be earning their laces in the coming weeks.

“We’ve had a tremendous amount of community support for the Youth Run over the past eight years and we want to continue to engage the local community,” says Bernadette MacLellan, Kids’ Run Club program coordinator.  “It’s about building a healthier community by starting with our youth.  The Earn Your Laces campaign will not only reward youth for their efforts, but also help motivate them by recognizing people who already maintain an active lifestyle and have earned their laces.”

The Youth Run is scheduled for Saturday, June 2 at the Joan Harriss Cruise Pavilion in Sydney.  That day, the YMCA of Cape Breton will also be holding a Healthy Kids’ Day following the Youth Run; for details visit, www.cbymca.com.
