Countdown to Fiddlers Run: 8-9 September 2018

Learn to Run 2016

Our popular 9-week program with a weekly coaching session will be starting on Monday, April 11th at 6:30p.m. at the YMCA of Cape Breton on Charlotte Street in Sydney.

“The Learn to Run program began in 2008 and has been going strong since then,” says Nick Burke, Fiddlers Run Race Director.

“We’ve had hundreds of people of all ages and abilities, and from various communities participate in Learn to Run.”

Over the course of the eight-week Learn to Run program, participants follow a walk/run schedule and eventually work their way up to running a 5km distance. In addition to the weekly group runs, physicians, dietitians, physiotherapists and other experts visit to discuss everything from injury prevention to proper nutrition. “The goal is to see Learn to Run graduates participate in the Fiddlers Fun Run in June upon completing the program,” says Burke.

The Learn to Run program is a partnership between the Cape Breton Fiddlers Run and the YMCA of Cape Breton. It begins on Monday, April 11 at 6:30 p.m. at the YMCA of Cape Breton at 399 Charlotte St. in Sydney.

Anyone interested in joining is encouraged to visit to register online:

Participants can also sign up that evening by coming to the YMCA, but pre-registration is strongly encouraged.

The cost is $25 per person for the nine-week session, which includes a technical running t-shirt and automatic registration for the Fiddlers Fun Run on Saturday, June 11.

Participants should come prepared to run each night, including the first night, rain or shine.

Learn to Run programs are also getting underway again this spring in both North Sydney and Glace Bay. The North Sydney LTR registration is Wednesday, April 6 at 6:00 pm at Emera Centre, with the group runs taking place every Thursday moving forward at 6:30 pm at the Carmen Young Track.

For the Glace Bay LTR, registration will be Monday April 11 at 6:30 at the DAM fitness center. Scheduled runs this year will most likely be Tuesday and Thursday evenings and another run each week is recommended.
