Three records broken at Cape Breton Fiddlers Run

SYDNEY, N.S. – Records were broken in the men’s full

marathon, women’s full marathon and 5K women’s events at Sunday’s Cape Breton Fiddlers Run.

In the women’s full marathon, Kaili Van Vulpen, 31, from Amherst, took first with a time of 3:06:00, also a new record. The Halifax Road Hammers runner was less than three minutes ahead of the second-place winner, Jen Nicholson, 49, who was in the lead until about halfway through the second lap.

James MacLellan, 31, from Sydney finished with a time of 2:33:37, approximately 13 minutes faster than the 2012 record set by Leo McCosham from P.E.I. McCosham was at the event to watch MacLellan run because he thought the recently retired military veteran was on track to become the new record holder, based on his time at race in Fredericton earlier this summer.

The women’s 5K race record was also broken. Paula James from Windsor, N.S., racing in the 40-49 category, was first across the finish line for both men and women with a time of 18:56.
